Summary: District 156 School Counseling Interns are members of a highly professional and invested team of student service personnel.  A District 156 Counseling Intern must demonstrate a keen awareness of and sensitivity to the issues facing young people and their families and understand implications for education of students with academic, social and/or emotional challenges.  To be successful in this role, School Counseling Interns must be able to function as members of a team and work collaboratively with department colleagues, deans, faculty, and other support staff, as they develop positive working relationships with students and families. 

 

Qualifications: 

• Must be enrolled in a school counselor preparation program (graduate level) and have completed the prerequisite coursework necessary to begin an internship. 

 

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Participate in the MTSS problem solving,  intervention, and teaming process
• Implement classroom-based programs and presentations
• Assist administration and staff to understand the familial, cultural and community components of students’ responses to instruction, learning and academic success. 
• Assess student learning needs in collaboration with teachers to develop effective plans that support academic growth.
• Assist in providing a comprehensive counseling curriculum for all students in three domains: academic, college and career, and social-emotional. 
• Provide individual support and group counseling
• Present on topics such as academic needs, social/emotional learning, and postsecondary planning.
• Participate in a variety of meetings: Individual Education Program meetings, 504 review meetings, problem-solving, attendance meetings, domain meetings, parent/student conferences, etc.
